The Dyno Cell
"One of Australia's most
State-of-the-art Dyno Cells"
This is no slap up a few walls, setup an
exhaust extraction fan... This project
took a couple years to design and about
6 months to build and tune the room.
Jim being the perfectionist that he is
has spent two years in the research and
development into the building of such an
international class facility prior to
starting the project. Once the enormous
suction fan (looks like a Boeing 737
engine) was installed, the tuning of the
room and both inlet and outlet plenums
began. Air flow and environmental
characteristics where tested and a
number of modifications where made to
allow the simulation of a wide range of
operating conditions. These ongoing
modifications (some of them being major
reconstruction works) took a lot of time
and effort.
A lot of time and effort has also been
put into the acoustic design of the
room. The room suppresses the unwanted
resonance and amplifies the important
frequencies to assist the tuning
process. A couple acoustics engineers
where employed to provide input into the
design of the room to allow this to
happen. The room has been tested and the
final results are highly satisfactory.
As a result the dyno room should really
be called a mini wind tunnel functions
ithout the assistance of a separate fan
in front of the car. Wind speeds of up
to about 140 km/h can be achieved.
Different operating altitude pressures
can be simulated.
The major advantages of this dyno room
is that operating conditions,
temperatures and air pressures can be
simulated and reproduced to maintain a
constant tuning environment. In the past
the Dynopack dyno was too accurate but
the environment could not be controlled
and hence small improvements as a result
of research and development could not be
measured. With the ability to control
the environment we have improved the
quality of testing and tuning and can
measure and repeat results as little as
1 rwkw.
Eg. The Dynopack is that accurate that
it can measure the effects of load on an
engine by turning headlights on and off.
This might sound a bit ridiculous but
for those who are after maximizing the
return on their investment in
modifications every kw here and there
counts!!
The room is now "tuned" and ready for
use. This is the only Dyno cell of it's
type in Australia.
What does this dyno room/cell
provide?
- State of the art Dynopack Dyno able to
hold up to 1200 rwkw at any RPM. 895
rwkw has been measured on a supercharged
car. (Bolt's onto your hubs with no
slippage, losses to 0%)
- Wind speeds of up to 140 km/h can be
produced through the wind tunnel
- Ability to control and stabilise
environment variables
- Full suite of diagnostic and
monitoring equipment
- Able to obtain Dyno run repeatability
second to none
- Environmentally friendly 1000 litre
cooling tank to reuse water
I would recommend that people pop in and
have a look at this facility themselves.
It is very impressive !!
