Titus came to Tunehouse as he heard just maybe we would be able to work out a way to get some additional power out of his Nissan 370Z. Being a pretty fussy guy he was a bit nervous the first time he came to the shop but it wasn’t long before he knew he was in the right place. Maybe it was watching Jim clean everything he used to an immaculate finish as he made Titus the strong latte on the company espresso machine, or maybe he could see in the way the workshop was presented – Either way, he trusted Tunehouse to do what we do best!
In the online blogosphere of Nissan 370z owners it’s pretty common knowledge that Nissan was pretty spot on with these cars and short of opening the engine you need to really careful with what you do otherwise you can quickly go backwards. Knowing only too well how to go about things Titus took our word we knew which direction to take.

Akrapovic – Known for designing and building probably the best exhaust systems money can buy was quickly short listed based on previous experience and was on order. The Titanium Evolutions system requires factory training for fitment due the sealing procedure required but was on and settling in no time on a Saturday at Tunehouse workshop. Titus was happy to wait around and couldn’t help get a few photo’s while his pride and joy was in pieces.

Knowing air in and air out is the name of the game, Titus fitted up his own custom intake system and was quickly back on the phone to inquire about moving forward with the tuning solution Jim said he knew would be perfect.
Unichip is a name many people probably haven’t heard for a while in the Australian market but there is some great news for those who know how to use it – It’s back! The new generation of Unichip product is back and better than ever with some fantastic features and the ability to work in with an endless number of factory ECU’s makes it a great option for the right project.

Wired into the 370z and loaded on the dyno the Akrapovic Evolution System sounded the goods but there was more to be had. Tunehouse Team Boss Jim Ghelis did his thing and tested / did his thing and tested and a few hours later came from the dyno grinning. You really need to know how to work with a Unichip to get the results from it and more to the point, Jim most certainly does.
See one of the power runs for yourself:
Titus even went out of his way to put how happy he was into words!
Dear Jim and Team Tunehouse,
Please allow me to take this opportunity to express my gratitude on your hardwork and expertise for my 370z recently!
Ever since I had my Akrapovic exhaust installed a while ago by you I knew I had chosen the best team in Sydney.
Not just one person but the entire team and place ooze meticulousness and professionalism. Your passion towards car tuning is what attracting me to return and striving for performance continuously.
Because of that you had my full confidence in tuning my 370z and the car speaks for your work itself!
The sound! The power gain! The torque! It was an unbelievably repeatable 18-25kw gain at the wheels! You have taken my car to a whole new level indeed!
I cant help smiling through each gear and thanking you for you and your team’s amazing work especially Tony.
Please keep up the great work so people who are passionate about cars can be looked after by you.
All the best to the current 86 project! Looking forward to its transformation in your hands!
Titus

What do you do with your daily driver when you did your apprenticeship at One of Australia’s Leading Performance Workshops who also happens to be the HKS Service Centre for Sydney?
Tony has been with Tunehouse for almost ten years now and although he’s now a fully fledged mechanic, he was that apprentice. To answer the question? He turned his locally built S15 200sx into a HKS fed 400KW + animal.
Tony found this low km bright yellow S15 an inspiration sitting at the car yard and scooped it up back in 2005. Although it hasn’t changed appearance too much since taking delivery, everything interesting under the skin certainly has. The factory SR20DET was modified relatively quickly with bolt-ons including the usual exhaust, inter cooler and ECU however the plan to go big was always there so when it came time to ripping the motor out, there wasn’t much left behind.

With a call to HKS placed and the parts to make it sing on order, the engine was out and disassembled. The Head was placed in the hands of HKS themselves for a stage 3 CNC Head Upgrade. While they were at it with the head upgrade was matched to the new custom inlet manifold which was (you guessed it) CNC Matched to the cylinder head for maximum flow. With a few back room conversation having taken place there is a special mix of Step 2 / Step 3 HKS Cams installed before the Head was send back, ready for assembly.

While this was all happening however the block was hardly lying around waiting for a tidy up. Instead it was fitted with a HKS 2.2L Crank and associated Connecting Rods and Pistons. Now with the HKS inspired increase in capacity it was all starting to take shape and there was no point skimping on the rest of the auxiliary bolt-ons. As such Tony found himself fitting a HKS T04Z turbo and suitable exhaust manifold to go with a custom exhaust system that runs from the turbo all the way back the rear bumper bar.
The ability of this combo was starting to stack up pretty quickly so soon the fuel system was in for a similar treatment. A custom Fuel Rail feeds a diet of 98 pump fuel to 1000cc injectors and kept in check by a motorsport adjustable fuel pressure regulator for good measure. With the Factory Air Flow Meter long gone a HKS FCON V-Pro Standalone ECU was wired in to make sure everything was adjustable. There’s a massive fuel surge tank in the boot being fed by an upgraded in-tank pump which is then pressurized up to the fuel rail by dual Motorsport 600HP Inline Fuel Pumps.
The Custom intercooler pipe work was put together in-house as was the front mount intercooler except to say some special Tunehouse tricks we’re used to ensure everything used was going to support to expected top end mumbo this combination is capable of. With the engine back in the car, started and back on the dyno Tunehouse Team Boss Jim Ghelis ran gave the FCON V-Pro some basic settings to let tony run the new combo in and with 14psi on board the 2.2L ran up 360KW at the rear wheels. Numbers like this are already impressive, but you need to keep in mind this setup has been built with 23-24 psi in mind for a final tune on pump fuel and as much as 35 psi on quality race fuel. Stay tuned…
Check-out one of the Power Runs for yourself in this video:
Out and enjoying 360KW at the wheel on a run in tune Tony already saw some opportunities in the standard driveline. While the factory 6 speed stays in place for now (he’s expecting to have to upgrade to the RB25 bigger brother 5 speed pretty quickly) he did take the opportunity to make a change to a 4.36:1 rear diff ratio and shim up a factory LSD a little tighter than factory in order to help get the power on earlier as well as to the ground a little better. While turning corners on the street is a little clunky, it’s sure is fun when it does hook up.
The Suspension has also been in for a street driven once over and is graced by some Tein Super Street Coilovers and host of suspension bushes upgraded to help tame all the power now on hand. With some custom in house modified strut tops dialed into custom wheel alignment specs the car certainly likes to go round corners too!

‘We wanted to take the guess work out of Performance Upgrades for our customers. We wanted them to be ‘modular’ so they can build them up over time without having to replace parts twice. We wanted to minimize the impact to warranty and above all, we wanted them to be great value so that customers could enjoy the entire experience and get on with driving the car. The THR Packages have proven to provide this and more…’
Jim Ghelis, Tunehouse Founder
THR – Parts & Performance Kits by Tunehouse
Have you ever heard the saying ‘only as good as the weakest link’? At Tunehouse we believe in this principle and we use it to develop the performance of each and every car that comes through the workshop. By understanding that your car will only ever perform as well as it’s ‘weakest link’, you can then turn this around and quickly see that you will in turn get the best results by upgrading the most restrictive or ‘weakest links’ first.
This is often overlooked in the performance industry and it’s common to here and see of parts being replaced unnecessary and this can have huge effect on budget and the experience for the customer. We decided the THR (Tunehouse Racing) Range of Performance upgrade kits needed to offer value and that basically meant upgrading the least amount of parts that would deliver the most amount of performance.
While Tunehouse can custom tune just about any car one way or another (We’ve worked extremely hard and invested in technology from all over the world to ensure we have a tuning solutions available for just about any car!) we also know that there are specific vehicle’s available that we’re often asked about and are simply popular among modifiers and performance car enthusiasts. For this reason there are a number of new and near new models that we support with our THR Performance Upgrade Kits.
The modular nature of the THR Kits can be seen in the progressive nature of the kits.

THR Spec S: With the S basically representing Street, you can expect an upgrade to your car that has virtually no compromise to daily driving. A Performance upgrade where we have aimed to improve drive-ability, straight line performance as well as improved torque spread – The THR Spec S upgrades often can be achieved with simply tuning your engines’ computer with minimal or no mechanical changes.
THR Spec C: The C is Spec S for Tunehouse stands for Clubsport. At this level of upgrade you can expect the driving experience to be more aggressive, often with mid range and top end performance being maximized within the engineering of factory hardware such as turbochargers and engine internals. With a Spec C upgrade we will be upgrading mechanical components of your vehicle with tried and tested in-house engineered solutions that deliver.
THR Spec R: Saying that the Spec R kits stands primarily for Race is probably an overstatements. The Spec R packages are designed for maximum performance while retaining your standard engine. That is, Forced induction systems are introduced or modified for maximum torque potential and support systems are upgraded to cater for them. THR Spec R kits are often tailored for drivers specific requested, but needless to say the testing is already done and the power is there, it’s simply a case of telling Tunehouse, how much you want.

- Tunehouse Development HSV R8 undergoing testing in the Tunehouse award winning Dyno Testing Cell (Tunehouse, Sydney).
Above, beyond and outside of these upgrades we’re also happy to discuss options. While we’ve provided these kits for some cars as a guide to what is achievable in terms of maximum possible value for money, we’re also extremely happy to discuss bespoke and custom upgrades with clients who are after something a little different and individualized.
Tunehouse is home to a number of claims, trophies and World firsts in terms of vehicle performance and it is through these antics that we know how these cars perform and can offer these kits. It is this passion for engineering, development and performance that drives us and this comes through in the solutions we provide our customers and the projects we get involved in.
Any number of ‘tuners’ can simply wind up the wick on a performance car – But it’s not until you have an appreciation for what a performance engine goes through in terms of daily, over time and at the race track, can you give your customers piece of mind that they can go out and enjoy their upgraded car as if it came from the factory floor like that – No fuss, no exceptions – just enjoy the car! We take the time to understand the engineering behind your car so we know that the upgrades we perform are reliable, consistent and proven!

Tunehouse team Boss Jim Ghelis puts the final touches on a new Race Engine for the Tunehouse development Subaru STI. Track proven 600+ HP engine technology that filters down to THR Performance Upgrade Kits.
This energy then filters down to the pre-developed packages that are the THR Performance Upgrades kits and we’re more than happy to share this knowledge and experience with our customers.
We don’t mind people we’ve built up a reputation not as the cheapest, but as the best. The icing on the cake of all upgrades performed at Tunehouse (Pre-developed or bespoke) is the attention to detail that we’ve become quite famous for and the Custom Tuning that goes into each result. Whether it’s a turnkey THR Spec S upgrade or a completely individualized solution, every single car is 100% Custom Dyno Tuned to ensure the best possible results, each and every time. It’s this approach that differs from all other tuners and it’s with this philosophy that Tunehouse continues to succeed.
If you’re after some ideas, performance upgrades or some tuning advice for your next project, don’t hesitate to call Tunehouse anytime on (02) 9557 4000 or email the shop at info@tunehouse.com.au We’re open Monday to Saturday every week so drop past the shop for yourself, see how we work and what we do differently that makes the difference.
Tunehouse 86 and BRZ Development – BRZ Suspension
The Subaru BRZ or ‘Toyota FT86’ as the platform is also know is reaching almost cult following – Developing a massive fan base in a very short amount of time. Continue reading
BRZ Suspension – The Baseline
The 86 / BRZ platform comes from the factory with a Macpherson strut type front end suspension which is commonly known for its relatively compact size and layout as well as efficient costs rather than outright performance characteristics. That is not to say it can’t be made to perform quite well however it is most definitely a compromise by performance car standards.
The rear end is a more fitting Independent Double wishbone arrangement. Generally speaking the reason the setup in the rear is generally more ‘desirable’ than a Macpherson setup is the rate of angle and alignment change during the movement of the suspension. A Macpherson Strut system generally has a significantly higher amount of change compared to a Double wishbone system.
STATIS VS DYNAMIC
Simply put – Static alignment is the geometry that is adjusted when you perform a wheel alignment. That is the alignment settings that your car has when sitting still. When we say ‘dynamic, what we are hinting at as it what actually happens when the car is moving, accepting the forces of bumps in the road, acceleration, braking and corner (Everything moves) and no online actually control arms, but bushes deflect and squirm under these loads as well so the static alignment often has very little to do with the dynamic conditions the car is subjected to.
Refer the video below by Technical partner Whiteline regarding the static wheel alignment settings that your BRZ / 86 is arriving from the factory with – In there is some interesting stuff!
The main point of contention is the lack of static camber in the front end – Luckily at Tunehouse we already have the parts to fix this. Adjustable front strut tops will offer improved castor and camber which will offer better turn in, less push understeer and give the driver more control in all situations through more accurate geometry. What to know more? Email info@tunehouse.com.au or call (02) 9557 4000 to find out now!
Tunehouse 86 and BRZ Development
– The Story Begins
The Subaru BRZ or ‘Toyota FT86’ as the platform is also know is reaching almost cult following – Developing a massive fan base in a very short amount of time.
The idea behind the car first came from camp Toyota – where engineers realised early that the a Subaru engineered power plant was going to be needed to get the centre of gravity as low as they wanted to provide the real driving balance they wanted to achieve. The rumours from the outset was the cars were going to be light, moderately powered and handle extremely well out of the box and give or take the styling queue from both Subaru and Toyota, it seems that’s exactly what they’ve done.
Engine
2.0L Flat Four Cylinder Engine
Bore (86mm) + Stroke (86mm)
Displacement: 1998cc
Compression Ratio: 12.5:1
Power: 147KW @ 7000 RPM
Torque: 205Nm @ 6400 RPM
Chassis
Wheelbase: 2570mm
Length: 4210mm
Width: 1775mm
Height: 1285mm
Curb Weight: From 1190k
Great effort has been made to get the setup of the car right – this is no throw together. Even though it a joint engineering effort from both Subaru and Toyota it is certainly no parts bin special. The Engine is located as far back as is feasible in order to achieve a front to rear balance of a claimed 53% front and 47% rear. The use of the boxer engine was purposeful in order to achieve such a low centre of gravity – the basis for which the handling was tuned. Macpherson Strut Suspension dominates the front end while a double wishbone setup is utilised in the rear.
There have been rumours of factory turbo versions and All Wheel Drive versions however in Australian the money has been on the innovative aftermarket industry to take these on as their latest challenge. Enter your performance shop, Tunehouse.
Tunehouse is known around Australia for their development of a number of cars and have the support of some of the biggest tuners in the world. The release date has been set as has the price and Tunehouse’s own Jim Ghelis was one of the first to look at the two options available in Australia to see which would suit out market the best for development. For this we’ll stay a little tight lipped except to say the engineering and development has already begun!
With the car still 2 months from delivery of the very first vehicle’s to Australia Tunehouse can already help!
